11:13 billymg awt: am i going to need to fiddle with ports to get akris working from my residential isp?
11:20 billymg hrm, nm, i see akris is using 8080 so it must be something else
11:33 awt_akris peer billymg
11:33 awt_akris lol - and I still managed to send a command as a message
11:34 billymg awt: i think i need to set up port forwarding in my router(s)
11:34 billymg isp modem -> router 1 -> router 2 (don't ask)
11:37 awt_akris Ok. If you want to configure your at for awt it's the same IP address but at port 54000 now.
11:42 billymg the default for akris is 8080 UDP, right?
11:42 awt billymg: are you trying to get the osx build working on your laptop?
11:42 billymg awt: no, on linux, i figured out why enter wouldn't submit

11:43 awt oh sweet! yeah default pest port is 8080.

14:27 gregorynyssa awt: Have you tested Akris on Windows?
14:28 gregorynyssa I asked two friends to test ChinaPestProgram on macOS. Unfortunately the GUI lags.
14:30 gregorynyssa The problem likely originates in the way that Java's AWT subsystem is implemented upon macOS.
14:30 gregorynyssa The program is still operable on macOS but the frame-rate of the GUI drops to 1-2.
14:30 gregorynyssa On Windows, even on a weak laptop, the frame-rate is around 60.
14:40 gregorynyssa billymg: Are you the author of pestnet.io?
14:44 gregorynyssa If so, thanks for having hosted and reformatted the specification of Pest.
14:51 gregorynyssa Vex: I can send you a copy of ChinaPestProgram if you want to join #pest.
~ 17 minutes ~
15:08 gregorynyssa Vex: Do you have a GPG key?
15:11 gregorynyssa I could not find your name in wot.deedbot.org.
15:21 gregorynyssa asciilifeform: If I might ask, did the advent of GPT 3.5 and 4 exceed your expectations regarding what neural networks are capable of?
15:22 gregorynyssa Or did you know all along that these capabilities were coming (and that members of the general public would have access).
15:22 gregorynyssa Sorry if this is a slightly grave question.
15:25 gregorynyssa2 Testing again with a variant username.
15:31 billymg http://logs.bitdash.io/pest/2023-07-30#1029236 << yup and ty

15:32 billymg awt: ok, so i stood up an akris station on my macbook and have it peering fine with my gentoo box over the local network
15:32 billymg the two stations can talk to each other
15:33 billymg so either a) my port forwarding is messed up somewhere upstream (with one of the routers or the isp modem), or b) my isp is blocking 8080

16:29 gregorynyssa billymg: asciilifeform: I wanted to mention that I would be interested in sharing the source-code of my client.
16:29 gregorynyssa I sent a copy to `signpost` already (but since then I have done some important refactoring).
16:30 signpost yeah consider releasing as vpatches
16:30 gregorynyssa I have also created an .msi installer for Vex, assuming that he uses Windows.
16:31 gregorynyssa signpost: I must confess that I have not yet used V. Later I will try it.
16:33 gregorynyssa signpost: asciilifeform: Does any of the V programs contain its own implementation of the diff(1) algorithm?
16:46 awt gregorynyssa: I have not tried it on windows. Should work, but I don't know what needs to be installed in order to be able to compile the serpent encryption library.
16:50 awt gregorynyssa: have you read about pentacle? You can build vpatch and vdiff with it.
16:53 gregorynyssa awt: I fear not. Is Pentacle the name of a program?
16:54 gregorynyssa http://problematic.site/src/pentacle/ << Pentacle consists of a shell-script and a set of Debian packages?
16:54 gregorynyssa Is that right?
16:54 awt billymg: another option (of which you may already be aware) is to build a linux binary, upload it to a server, and connect akris desktop to it using ssh port forwarding (gotta set the --remote option). Otoh, would be nice to figure out the port forwarding issues locally.
16:57 awt gregorynyssa: as well as a set a vpatches.
16:58 gregorynyssa Since the packages are .deb files, it means that Pentacle must be used on a Debian-based OS, is that right?
16:58 gregorynyssa Would Ubuntu qualify?
16:59 gregorynyssa My favorite distribution of Linux among the well known ones is Slackware.
16:59 gregorynyssa I am required to use Ubuntu for work, though.
16:59 gregorynyssa signpost: I just read this article of yours: http://trinque.org/2022/03/31/deadlock/
17:00 gregorynyssa That is not a bad summary of late German thought. Doctrines of this sort pervade Spengler's writings as well.
~ 16 minutes ~
17:16 awt gregorynyssa: I don't believe a debian based system is required, since most here have successfully built pentacale on gentoo.
~ 2 hours 50 minutes ~
20:07 signpost thanks; I still think the wot is a necessary cultural tool in properly answering nietzsche.
20:08 signpost btw I have begun a draft of the pentacle readme
20:08 * signpost will continue to flesh this out
20:09 signpost http://logs.bitdash.io/pest/2023-07-30#1029255 << yes, phf's work. I collected his patches and subsequent authors' work in pentacle.

20:20 gregorynyssa This is similar to "sbase" from suckless.org.
20:21 signpost yep apt comparison
20:24 gregorynyssa Is the presence of the "dists" and "main" folders in /debs intentional?
20:24 gregorynyssa http://trinque.org/src/pentacle/debs/
20:27 gregorynyssa This reminds me of when I went through the package-list of Slackware and tried to narrow down the most useful packages.
20:29 signpost yeah, I had to provide those to satisfy debootstrap using that as a package source
