09:46 gregorynyssa tomorrow is 100th anniversary of founding of Chinese Communist Party.
09:52 mats for me, keyboard time is strictly rationed like a mana bar because the symptoms progressively ramp up, 1-2 being numbness or tingling, 3-4 aching and dull pain, 5-9 sharper pain, needle like electric sensation, grasping becomes difficult, the claw, some loss of sensation or sensitivity in the tips
09:55 mats going from 1-5 can take as little as twenty mins of typing, 6-8 inside an hour, and the soonest i could reasonably expect symptoms to abate from that level back to 1-2 after giving up the kb might take as long as six weeks

14:07 snsabot (trilema) 2017-10-03 asciilifeform: ( i.e. can you make a matched pair of otp such that 1) output is cryptoentropic 2) can only leave the device at particular baud rate , no matter what is done to it ? )
14:07 snsabot (trilema) 2017-11-22 asciilifeform: ( and , jaw-droppingly, just about every book 'on crypto' omits the otp proof. that very same, that constitutes the alpha and the omega of what's actually proven in the subject at all )
14:07 snsabot (trilema) 2018-04-12 asciilifeform: right now 2 types of cipher are known -- otp, and errythingelse. only re otp is there a mathematical statement of any substance ( i.e. it is degenerate case, leaks 0 bits )
14:07 snsabot (trilema) 2018-10-23 asciilifeform: Mocky: it's an old idea of asciilifeform's -- otptron gets 2 sd slots. fill switch triggers fill-up of both with identical otp. then you fly to bananistan with ~one~ and trade with the other fella for his. then you both have identical xor of pad-a and pad-b, in the respective slots.
14:07 snsabot (trilema) 2016-06-10 asciilifeform: essentially the Big Dirty Secret re crypto is that NO ONE HAS YET proven that non-otp cryptography ~actually exists~
14:08 asciilifeform puman: the thing is, otp ~per se~ is as simple as a shovel, once you understand why the pad gotta be same length as the payload and never reused. 100% of the traditional difficulty is the rng.

14:12 snsabot (trilema) 2016-02-02 asciilifeform: actually for many years i have thought about the ideal electric otp.
14:12 snsabot (trilema) 2016-02-06 asciilifeform: (the otp proof is kindergarten-level - the ciphertext tells you nothing at all - as in 0 bits - about the key or the plaintext)
14:12 snsabot (trilema) 2016-02-06 asciilifeform: (the otp proof is kindergarten-level - the ciphertext tells you nothing at all - as in 0 bits - about the key or the plaintext)
14:12 snsabot (trilema) 2015-08-21 asciilifeform: otp has precisely three weaknesses even in principle: generation of key (solved by civilized rng); reuse of key (solved by erasing each bit immediately after it is used in a xor); capture of key by enemy (in common with any other cipher! and solved with grenade pin)
14:12 asciilifeform grr botched the link. but nm.

21:30 asciilifeform http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-06-30#1041916 << my current draft consists of a) for strangers, pow b) for folx who have a shared keystring (not long-term or esp. valuable) S -- simply demonstrate knowledge of S by sending hash(S+message+S), then don't need to pow
21:30 dulapbot Logged on 2021-06-30 16:59:38 signpost: I've also considered various schemes for an "anti-ddos" token sequence predictable by both ends, but not 3rd party
21:31 verisimilitude Oh, my thinking was similar, but pseudonymous.
21:31 verisimilitude ``Good IPs get whitelisted.''
21:31 asciilifeform verisimilitude: can't use ip for anything whatsoever in udpism
21:31 asciilifeform because trivially forged origin
21:31 verisimilitude Sure.
21:32 verisimilitude This only matters when under attack.
21:32 asciilifeform for fucks sake
21:32 asciilifeform EVERYTHING IS ALWAYS UNDER ATTACK ffs
21:32 verisimilitude This was for something of my design, anyway.
21:32 asciilifeform 'this lock only matters when there's a thief pulling on it'
21:32 asciilifeform holyfuq what drugs are you on..
21:33 * asciilifeform baffled.
21:33 verisimilitude I shouldn't have mentioned my tangentially related idea, I see.
21:33 asciilifeform no, mention
21:33 asciilifeform but take 5sec to think, lol, before 'only matters when under attack'
21:34 verisimilitude I like to consider running a forum.
21:34 * asciilifeform must bbl
21:34 gregorynyssa http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-06-30#1041770 << I suffered from this during my sophomore-year of college, but one day after resting, it just went away by itself, permanently.
21:34 snsabot Logged on 2021-06-30 05:55:41 mats: going from 1-5 can take as little as twenty mins of typing, 6-8 inside an hour, and the soonest i could reasonably expect symptoms to abate from that level back to 1-2 after giving up the kb might take as long as six weeks
21:34 gregorynyssa the period of affliction, when I had to take frequent rests from typing, was a few months.
21:35 gregorynyssa I also quit using Emacs during that period, but that may or may not be related.
21:35 verisimilitude Well, there's a distinction between meaningless messages that could be trivially discarded and automated spam, for this forum.
21:35 verisimilitude One survival trait is simply, ``Don't attract attention.''.
~ 20 minutes ~
21:56 thestringpuller "think verisimilitude think"; couldn't resist
21:59 whaack gregorynyssa: do you recall the first moment of pain?
22:01 whaack gregorynyssa: My first episode appeared out of nowhere, or at least i don't remember what triggered it, the second (current) episode happened after a specific action.
22:10 gregorynyssa http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-06-30#1041952 << I have pretty much the same story. the pain appeared out of nowhere. the angle of my wrists as I used the computer affcted the likelihood of the pain occurring.
22:10 snsabot Logged on 2021-06-30 18:01:01 whaack: gregorynyssa: My first episode appeared out of nowhere, or at least i don't remember what triggered it, the second (current) episode happened after a specific action.
22:12 whaack gregorynyssa: well i will pray to odin that my ailment magically dissapears forever like yours did
22:12 gregorynyssa and, as `mats` said above, whenever the pain started, it would keep building up, requiring a longer and longer cool-down.
22:13 gregorynyssa http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-06-30#1041955 << I hadn't realized until seeing your story and that of `mats` how lucky I was.
22:13 snsabot Logged on 2021-06-30 18:12:10 whaack: gregorynyssa: well i will pray to odin that my ailment magically dissapears forever like yours did
22:13 whaack my physio said to just 'listen to my body' and not do any weird shit like wearing wrist splints or avoiding typing/activity when i was pain free
22:14 whaack while i am pain free*
22:14 whaack so my day to day is back to normal and i just take longer breaks
22:15 whaack i had a similar injury from surfing, colloquially referred to as surfer's ribs, where there was inflammation of the ribcage cartilage
22:15 gregorynyssa is that caused by the pressure of the body against the surfboard?
22:15 whaack surfing and any activity that involved putting pressure on the left side of my rib cage borought pain that came and went
22:16 gregorynyssa ah, sorry to hear.
22:16 whaack gregorynyssa: yes i think it's repeated trauma against the ribbcage
22:16 whaack anyways i went 2 months of giving up surfing etc. to let the problem heal
22:16 whaack and eventually i went to a doctor who said that it would heal on its own and that as long as i could endure the pain there was no problem with continuing surfing
22:17 whaack so i went back to surfing and endured a lot of pain in order to stay in the water
22:17 whaack and then yup...it just dissapeared forever
22:17 verisimilitude My system has many issues, I know. I have time to mull it over.
22:17 gregorynyssa nice
22:17 whaack i have another buddy who just started surfing and he has the same rib cage injury
22:18 whaack he went to the doctor and she said "don't do ANYTHING that brings pain. rest full stop."
22:18 thestringpuller i would post origin of meme here, but don't want to anger asciilifeform with spamola
22:19 whaack my conclusion is that nobody knows wtf is going on. and therefore the 'listen to the body' and just try to stay normal is the best approach
22:19 gregorynyssa very much so
22:19 whaack and even if someone does know wtf is going on it's hard for an individual to distinguish who knows what
22:19 verisimilitude It's some Netflix show.
22:20 verisimilitude I don't like the trend; it's not enough to pay to watch something, but make an account first.
22:21 gregorynyssa http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-06-30#1041978 << much like with software, haha..
22:21 snsabot Logged on 2021-06-30 18:19:47 whaack: and even if someone does know wtf is going on it's hard for an individual to distinguish who knows what
22:25 gregorynyssa speaking of which, as a diver, though not surfer, the recent story about the drowning gave me slight chills
22:25 thestringpuller if i could break my addiction to television I would save so much money, but in the grand scheme...
22:25 thestringpuller not nearly as bad as my addiction to comics, effectively have comic library now for 2010 decade
22:28 gregorynyssa http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-06-30#1041871 << if the team of apilayer.com really has just eight people as pictured, and one million customers, that is quite impressive. reminds me of the old ITA. maybe they are using LISP on the inside.
22:28 snsabot Logged on 2021-06-30 14:19:52 billymg: asciilifeform: yeah, i haven't looked too hard yet but all the "geolookup" libraries seem to depend on one of the few large API providers, e.g. https://apilayer.com/
22:33 mats people still pay for media? kek
22:33 asciilifeform ^
22:33 mats ill give you an invite to a private tracker for a song
22:34 mats offer stands for anyone in my l2, i have a few invites banked
22:47 verisimilitude What does ``for a song'' mean?

23:03 CobraBTC Mircea had 1,450,000 bitcoin
23:15 asciilifeform CobraBTC: wouldja fuck off and die already
23:19 shinohai Don't you have an asshole to protect from Calvin Ayre CobraBTC ?
23:21 shinohai kek
23:23 asciilifeform btw 'Channel #asciilifeform isn't registered.' and 'You must be a channel operator to register the channel' still not fixed.
23:24 asciilifeform i.e. very soon will no longer be habitable.
23:26 asciilifeform i.e. anyone currently here and not on dulapnet, is officially on notice that asciilifeform , snsabot , and watchglass will pack up and move likely the very next time the sewer backs up here.
23:26 asciilifeform (and perhaps prior.)
23:27 thimbronion asciilifeform: udp PoW seems like an interesting project. Lemme know if there's any exploratory stuff I could help with.
23:27 shinohai asciilifeform: still some sort of weirdness where chan has to be *empty* before one can get ops and re-register it.
23:27 asciilifeform BingoBoingo gregorynyssa shinohai and possibly others ^
23:27 asciilifeform shinohai: well i can't very well empty it w/out being op, can i
23:27 shinohai lol nope.
23:28 shinohai ANywho, I'm already completely setup on dulapnet so no worries here.
23:28 asciilifeform thimbronion: i expect it's pretty straightforward; only open q is how and when to set the 'difficulty'
23:28 asciilifeform shinohai: a++
23:28 asciilifeform would like to give advanced warning to folx who have not, tho
23:30 thimbronion A project I used in the past called Bitmessage allowed the user to specify difficulty level for any message addressed to himself. No one ever sent me messages so I have no idea how effective that was lol.
23:31 shinohai lol BitMessage py application was the one that exposed users privkeys, no?
23:33 thimbronion shinohai: I believe there was a remote execution vuln. recently.
23:33 thimbronion Unaware of any privkey sharing.
23:37 verisimilitude It's certain that such a field in a UDP packet should be at the beginning of the data, next to the IP addresses, port, and checksum, at the least.
23:38 mats verisimilitude: free. i also accept covers of wonderwall
23:39 verisimilitude Oh; may I have an invitation?
23:40 mats provide your email addr over pm, you can also encrypt the string to http://wot.deedbot.org/B37F49DC35FD838B1F8783CC59C93F63549036BD.html if you like
23:43 asciilifeform http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2021-06-30#1042014 << doesn't matter whether beginning or end, you still gotta read whole thing to hash it

23:44 mats feel free to create a burner email btw
23:50 verisimilitude Should I?
23:50 verisimilitude Be there reason not to use one attached to my domain?
23:51 verisimilitude Be there a way to avoid using an email address for this, also?
23:52 verisimilitude It's good taste, asciilifeform.
23:53 verisimilitude Besides that, checking the hash before hashing is just smart.
23:53 thestringpuller mats: there was a time where I had multiple torrent feeds into a large server. server automatically organized media and served to xbmc. was also going to get TV tuner since cable was essentially free so could get live tv as well.
23:56 thestringpuller main problem for me is it's too much work to maintain. the work was mainly to avoid commercial breaks; now I can just pay that pain away. honestly south park was right, a business model where you annoy your customer out of their money works.
23:56 mats i just have a computer wired to the tv lol
23:57 mats hmm, bill cosby released from prison
