14:36 thimbronion Anyone here ever tried boat life?
14:39 asciilifeform thimbronion: asciilifeform at one time considered it, in the period when orlov propagandized it; and nearly decided to buy the latter's tub when it was put up for sale. but was cured by, iirc, mp
14:41 asciilifeform ( who described how you'll pay through the nose for even basic plumbing, not even speaking of any 3rd-party repair work, given as the entire market is optimized for 'yachters' w/ $maxint, rather than folx who want 'live like white man on african budget via magick tech' )
14:41 snsabot (trilema) 2015-04-07 asciilifeform: BingoBoingo: there's a reason orlov et al live in boats and not trucks
14:42 asciilifeform the fact that e.g. orlov ended up in the end selling the tub and on land again, quite likely for good -- suggests that the gambit as he proposed it ('get out of decaying civilization and rents' etc) does not work.
14:44 thimbronion asciilifeform: I didn't know he'd sold his boat. I vaguely recall his engine was fucked up or something.
14:44 asciilifeform thimbronion: sold (and iirc even for btc)
14:44 asciilifeform today lives in ru somewhere, on entirely dry land.
14:46 * asciilifeform actually investigated what it'd cost to operate such a boat. even e.g. docking (the only place where you'd have net access, fresh water, and walk to land) costs quite comparable to rent for a substantial flat in the locale. (at least in east usa.)
14:47 asciilifeform fuel aint phree either (and sails, even if yer tub, like orlov's, has'em at all) do ~0 good in 'parking lot' where you spend most time typically
14:47 asciilifeform and 'mileage' is comparable to bulldozer's.
14:47 thimbronion Local marina has slips for 415/mo for a 35' boat.
14:48 asciilifeform thimbronion: includes mains current, water, etc. ?
14:48 thimbronion Electricity is 10/mo.
14:49 asciilifeform notbad
14:49 asciilifeform thimbronion: may want to look into whether same price in winter (when ~uninsulated sad tub is a humid cold tomb, and most folx not sitting there)
14:50 asciilifeform of course if yer actually 100% untethered from slave empire, could simply sail south.
14:52 asciilifeform thimbronion: i remember 1 interesting mindfuck -- when went to look re what similar tubs cost from other than orlov -- there was 100% of the time an extra 0 in the price
14:53 thimbronion asciilifeform: In this range: https://www.geminicatamarans.com/GEMINI/catamaran-preview-basic-info?Vessel_id=699516?
14:54 asciilifeform there seems to be a 'stealth bomber' effect in these -- the target market is folx w/ $maxint (or, in some cases, willingness to take out 6-7fig$ credit) and so outlandish cost, 2ndhand sellers prefer to sit on'em rather than let go for 1 fewer decimal place than purchased
14:54 asciilifeform thimbronion: aha, exactly what i was speaking of
14:54 asciilifeform car-sized tub for cost of house.
14:56 asciilifeform thimbronion: orlov had some interesting notes re how typical yacht is not designed to be lived on (esp. in cold waters) -- consequently he made various modifications to his (mainly -- added potbelly stove)
14:57 thimbronion asciilifeform: I believe mp's recommendation was to get a *new* boat.
14:58 asciilifeform thimbronion: aaha (i wonder why did not recommend 'new space station')
14:58 thimbronion At least in the case of novices.
14:58 thimbronion I would buy a used russian space station.
14:58 asciilifeform 'shipping not included' lol
15:00 asciilifeform at any rate, asciilifeform was not and does not ever expect to be in target market for new boat, or used space station, and so did not take any interest in these variants. did however investigate 2ndhand boats, and errything re subj that could be investigated w/out spending megabux.
15:00 asciilifeform came to conclusion that would end up, at best, in same place as orlov ('plz buy my mostly-intact tub, kthx') and minus whatever dough.
15:02 thimbronion At times air travel gets to me.
15:02 * asciilifeform only even came as close as he did to buying, because orlov was offering his ~for coin~. i.e. the coin with which can't buy ~anything else w/out very expensive and potentially unlimited headache )
15:02 snsabot (asciilifeform) 2020-12-17 asciilifeform: http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2020-12-17#1026503 << this is quite far from accurate description imho of what's happening. can't speak for entire 'civilized' reich, but in usa, if you 'cash out btc', and for sumthing other than a physical mafia suitcase of benjies -- tax collectors will take 50-100% of yer 'winnings'
15:04 thimbronion I suspect by the end of next year "proof of vaccination" will be required to fly, and the mask requirement will still be there.
15:04 thimbronion *this year
15:04 BingoBoingo Trying to boat life here would be substantially more expensive than apartment life
15:07 asciilifeform BingoBoingo: boat life (depending on what you count 'life') can be almost arbitrarily cheap and low-tech, in principle. and as i understand, in e.g. parts of south asia -- is. but in 'civilized world' is strongly associated with wealth peacocking, and so will not be permitted to be cheap, by the folx presently doing it (and they have quite a bit of say)
15:14 thimbronion I suppose I could just get a kayak: https://www.adventure-journal.com/2019/12/man-paddled-kayak-germany-australia/
