10:27 asciilifeform thimbronion: wondered about the horsepower on these vs. the traditional x86. try build ffa on it!
10:29 thimbronion asciilifeform: I will give it a shot.

11:31 billymg http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/alethepedia/2020-11-20#1001205 << what kind of OS are you running on it?
11:31 snsabot Logged on 2020-11-20 08:50:41 thimbronion: Currently running an arm macbook.
11:32 thimbronion billymg: OSX It's my toilet/consulting machine. I had to get it because the battery in my old macbook started expanding.
11:34 billymg thimbronion: gotcha, looking now i see that a variant of their "pro" line also comes with this new chip https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro/13-inch
11:34 billymg thought before it was only the "air" model
11:35 thimbronion billymg: exactly
11:35 asciilifeform thimbronion: i've been through 3 'balloon' batteries now..
11:35 thimbronion asciilifeform: same
11:37 * billymg must be lucky, had same macbook pro "retina" since 2012 and original battery still going strong
11:37 thimbronion I wonder if it's because I rarely ever drain the battery...
11:38 billymg thimbronion: was curious about the OS after reading this article https://archive.is/u7aWQ (says that the new machines will ONLY boot on the latest version of macOS, so was wondering if that also applied to non-apple operating systems)
11:39 billymg also describes brand new phone home system in the new (required) OS
11:40 billymg "It turns out that in the current version of the macOS, the OS sends to Apple a hash (unique identifier) of each and every program you run, when you run it."
11:45 asciilifeform thimbronion: all of my dead batteries had cycle count <4
11:46 asciilifeform billymg: 'feature' copied from microshit/w10
11:46 thimbronion billymg: I've also been looking at getting a system76 laptop.
11:47 thimbronion billymg: hopefully as consulting winds down over the next year I can transition to something like that.
11:49 asciilifeform thimbronion: i gave up long ago in chase for 'good laptop'
11:49 asciilifeform there aint any, and not likely to be.
11:50 thimbronion asciilifeform: I won't contest that.
11:52 billymg thimbronion: i'm in same boat re: macbook as workhorse for (now occasional) fiat gig as well as general toilet box
11:52 billymg though with ancient version of os x
11:52 billymg fiat gigs*
11:54 thimbronion I'm definitely looking forward to getting a local gentoo box set up again. It's fucking loud though and I hace no place to put it at the moment.
11:54 billymg asciilifeform: yeah i remembered w10 being the OS that jumped the shark with regard to phone home features but never read more into it as never had any desire to go anywhere near windows (since using it in college long ago for pc gaming)
11:54 billymg sad that apple went the same way
11:54 billymg though certainly not surprising
11:56 billymg thimbronion: i solved the noise problem on my desktop by switching out all case fans for Noctua brand fans
11:56 thimbronion billymg: I did the same. It used to be way worse.
11:57 billymg ah
11:57 thimbronion billymg: I have a watercooled thing that is completely silent - but it's not amd, etc.
11:58 billymg maybe some other component fan causing the noise? CPU heatsink fan? vidcard, psu?
12:00 billymg IMO if not overclocking then a large air cooled heatsink is sufficient, even on the 125W amd i'm using
12:01 thimbronion billymg: I'm in kind of a small space at the moment and there's just no escape.
12:02 thimbronion But yes I have dual cpus, both with giant noctua fans.
12:03 billymg nice
12:03 billymg those are really wonderful fans
12:03 thimbronion Also installed recently a rather powerful graphics card with a pretty noisy fan - haven't been able to get the display workig since then unfortunately
12:04 billymg ahh, yeah my vid card is very basic, not for any kind of gaming or 3D work
