Ah... Sierracharts has some nice analysis features. If you do C++, it shouldn't be too hard to map that there. I've been pondering writing a BTCT trade engine module, but I realized it's 20 years since I wrote C++, so I skipped it :-) |

without adjustable periouds you just end up with a candlestick chart like havelock has |
| 01:44 |
inhies |
like a daily candlestick |
| 01:44 |
inhies |
which is alright i guess, but hourly, daily, etc would be nice |
| 01:44 |
inhies |
not sure hwo you could cleanly integrate that in with the standard highstock range selector |
| 01:45 |
inhies |
(1 day, 1 week, 1 month, etc) |
| 01:46 |

It would need a page reload, or possibly some ajax pulling of a new piece of series data, because it'd essentially be a different series on the chart |
| 01:46 |
inhies |
yea |
| 01:46 |
inhies |
you wouldnt really even need to do any crazy ajax |
| 01:46 |
inhies |
just more parsing of the standard data |
| 01:46 |
inhies |
to group it in to perioids |
| 01:46 |

and then make a new series |
| 01:47 |

then just swap out the series on the chart when a link is clicked or something |

you could as well say that buying mining gear is a bet on the aliens showing up and wanting to buy it for infinite money. |

inhies |
your blog post is not well presented because mircea_popescu didn't write it |
| 03:14 |
furuknap |
Ah, you're arguing about the wording. That's fine. The article is trying to show that in the case of a price drop, a miner gains more coins by holding gear. Difficulty isn't relevant here because mining isn't part of the equation. |
| 03:15 |
mircea_popescu |
well, you seemed to interested to know why people are throwing a fit avbout it. |
| 03:15 |

Yup, I get what you're saying about that :-) |
| 03:15 |

it's the wording. any one miner knows he's not betting on THAT. so you'll get a lot of misdirected protestation |

this is true, and i do it all the time myself. |
| 03:19 |
mircea_popescu |
nevertheless, it helps if you contradict something germane to the issue rather than something random, i think. |
| 03:21 |
furuknap |
I'm not sure it is as random as that. I wrote the article based on a lot of questions asked on the Reddit forums and people universally tended to completely ignore the effect of price fluctuations of their gear. One miner had just bought around 50 GPUs and hadn't realized that when the price of LTC dropped, he actually earned more from just having that gear than from mining. |
| 03:23 |
mircea_popescu |
this may also be true. |
| 03:23 |
mircea_popescu |
truth of the matter is miners are so far away from any sort of financial understanding it's probably wasted effort to debate which of their dumbass notions should be contradicted etc. |

That is, and I'm not joking, the topic of my next article :-) Miners have a limited understanding of finance, just as financial people have a limited understanding of mining. When I talk to miners, they seem to argue that "just holding coins is really bad if the price drops while a miner can always resell his hardware" and not understanding anything about hedges in finance. |
| 03:25 |

myeah. that's why i've made the futures etc. |

| 03:26 |
furuknap |
When I talk to financial people, they tend to argue that "well, buying hardware is so much of a hassle, and what if it breaks? You're left with nothing!" not realizing how a miner with some hardwre competence can fix or replace hardware as easily as they purchase an option or future. |

ASICs is a specialized piece of hardware that doesn't really have any resell value after a relatively short time. GPUs on the other hand has resale value, can be fixed, tuned, and easily replaced, and in some cases, it can even make sense to have a few spares laying around because unused cards don't depreciate much and thus isn't an asset cost. |
| 03:31 |

| 03:36 |

not really. |
| 03:38 |

A lot of mining operations popping up on LTC now could greatly benefit from hedging against price fluctuations. A fund that does LTC mining combined with a sound hedging strategy could really make a killing. |

Think of it even simpler: You have two states of operation. One is gathering coins, the other is selling coins. When you are gathering coins, you want the price to be as low as possible and when you're selling coins, you want the price to be as high as possible. |
| 04:49 |

The counter-intuitive thing that miners miss is that they're arguing that they want to pay as much as possible for their coins and then sell for the same price, which doesn't make sense when you think about it. |

It seems to me, at least on the surface, that GOG.F is a reasonable purchase. Timing is actually less important if the manager is reasonable (like Chaang says). 2.5 BTC invested in mining is 2.5 BTC invested in mining regardless of when it happens. If the investment is sound, it doesn't really matter when that happens. |

ThickAsThieves |
but i'll check it out |
| 06:46 |
fiat500 |
actually his thesis appears to be that inflation is good because you have more units for the same value |
| 06:47 |
fiat500 |
someone's been spending too much time on the silk road |
| 06:49 |
fiat500 |
parallel to your argument furuknap is: i have a pc that i do software dev on for an hourly rate, hence the lower my hourly rate the more i profit because the value of my pc denominated by my hourly rate increases |
| 06:50 |
furuknap |
You are quite free to demonstrate your lack of understanding by using different analogies. It doesn't change the math. |
| 06:51 |
fiat500 |
its the same argument you made, replacing pc for mining hardware, and hourly rate for btc/usd |
| 06:51 |
furuknap |
OK. |
| 06:51 |
ericmuys_ |
furuknap: his analogy is spot on. your math is twisted. |
| 06:51 |
ericmuys_ |
yes the math is correct, but it should not be applied to the situation you apply it to |
| 06:52 |
furuknap |
Then explain where the math is wrong. Use the trading I explained and run the numbers. Prove me wrong, please. I so want this to not be right too. |
| 06:52 |
fiat500 |
if i cared to spend on things using my hourly rate, and the conversion from my hourly rate to other items remained constant, then your math is solid |
| 06:52 |
ericmuys_ |
^^^ exactly |
| 06:52 |
ericmuys_ |
but that is NOT reality |
| 06:53 |
fiat500 |
but this isnt the case with btc (yet?), perhaps one day its real world value will be independent from fiat |
| 06:53 |
furuknap |
You analogy is completely irrelevant in that you don't retain your hours for later resale at a higher value. |
| 06:53 |
ericmuys_ |
you're wasting a bunch of peoples time on nonsense. I want my 10 minutes back |
| 06:54 |
ThickAsThieves |
do you want them back in PCs or in minutes? |
| 06:54 |
furuknap |
If instead you _contracted_ someone at the low rate that you could later resell at a higher rate, then you might be closer. |
| 06:54 |
fiat500 |
LOL |
| 06:54 |
ericmuys_ |
LOL |
| 06:54 |
furuknap |
Thus you demonstrate your lack of understanding my using an analogy that doesn't work. |

| 06:56 |
ericmuys_ |
I'm joking, but you need to take a step back away from the monitor |
| 06:56 |
fiat500 |
you cant get around the fact that the higher the rate the more real money you get out of it |
| 06:56 |
fiat500 |
and real money = real value |
| 06:57 |
furuknap |
Again, you're clearly demonstrating your utter lack of understanding, but I'm not really going to explain it to you yet again. |
