11:57 billymg btw if anyone here (or any log readers) don't have a trb node running yet, it was stupid easy using pentacle
12:00 billymg i literally just took the binary that pentacle spit out, threw it on the server, and ran it -- no extra tweaking necessary (other than a few -addnode flags passed at startup to seed it with peers)
12:02 signpost glad it's working out!

12:11 billymg was about to propose updating those with pentacle build instructions
12:12 busybot Current BTC price in USD: $21813.32
12:14 billymg the network's not far off from where the only "trb compat" nodes will be actual trb nodes, so would be nice to get more running
12:14 billymg maybe even include a signed static binary on trb.org, for those who really just want point-and-click

12:15 billymg yes, busybot, we know the price is going up

16:36 whaack hm can't seem to peer with my bot
16:45 billymg whaack: how are you doing the peering?
16:46 whaack billymg: in my irc client, i used the various commands %peer trbexplorer, %key trbexplorer mykey, %at trbexplorer ip:port
16:47 whaack then for trbexplorer i added an address table file and added the command line param --address-table-path
16:51 billymg hm, yeah, same that i do with mine
16:52 whaack probably have a typo or something somewhere
16:53 phf
16:53 phf hmm, that was unintentional
17:02 phf does blatta track chains at the moment? i've been sending messages with 0 selfchain, and presumably nothing's been complaining
~ 17 minutes ~
17:20 phf this should be valid seflchain. not that anything anywhere will notice...
17:26 awt phf: yes, blatta tracks cahins, but if a message breaks the chain and no GETDATA response arrives, it's still dumped to the client eventually anyway, unmarked.
17:27 awt *chains, obv
17:27 phf but not in the case of selfchain 0? it just silently treats it as a new chain?
17:28 asciilifeform phf: iirc chains not currently used in blatta at all with exception of triggering 'getdata'
17:28 awt phf ah yes - that is true
17:28 whaack awt: o/

17:29 asciilifeform phf: aha, afaik nope
17:29 whaack running out of ideas as to why i can't peer my bot with 'whaack'
17:30 awt phf: at one time I had a local implementation of all that - was a mess and discarded it. Haven't gotten back to it.
17:30 signpost http://logs.bitdash.io/pest/2022-07-08#1008576 << any future implementation would need to create ambiguity re: who holds privkeys.

17:30 signpost otherwise one guy's just eating a bunch of externalized risk; same shape problem as led to pest.
17:30 signpost but I appreciate the compliment!
17:31 awt whaack: hmm. how do you know it's not peered?
17:31 whaack awt: if i am properly peered, packets should go back and forth between my irc client blatta and bot blatta, regardless of whether the bot has connected to irc and tried to join the channel, correct?
17:31 awt whaack: yes correct
17:32 whaack awt: in my irc client when i type %at i get " trbexplorer 205.134.172.28:7780 no packets received from this address"
17:32 whaack one gotcha was i had the wrong ip set in the bot's configs, and updating the address-table i fed on start did not change the actual realnet.db , but i've since resolved that issue, so now i am not sure where to go
17:33 whaack on my bot's blatta end the logs only show the 2 lines
17:33 whaack INFO 2022-07-08 17:24:44,359: Listening for Pest packets on udp port 7780.
17:33 whaack INFO 2022-07-08 17:24:44,360: Listening for IRC connections on port 6670
17:33 asciilifeform signpost: asciilifeform at one pt contemplated a crackpot 'solution' where (sumbody obv. has the privs) but some # of folx store pre-signed tx (of e.g. a bitdime) from x -> y , and these somehow uncorked when req'd
17:34 whaack awt: or anyone peered with me can you confirm that %at gives you "whaack 198.211.117.133:7780"

17:44 whaack awt: nothing being sent , dont see any msg after i ran 'export LOG_RUBBISH=1' and restarted blatta
17:44 phf signpost: not plans re ui. ive played with different options, but everything's subpar. and presumably one wants a console version, so some form of vt, and a gui
17:45 awt whaack: are you certain it has anything in the AT?
17:45 whaack asciilifeform: is it possible udp is not allowed on your server by defrault?
17:45 whaack default*
17:45 whaack awt: i checked the db file at looks good it seems
17:46 awt whaack: maybe connect with weechat and do a listing
17:48 signpost phf: yep, I didn't love anything yet re: "tui" libs. several of them are basically ncurses ffi with some crap sprinkled on top.
17:50 signpost e.g. https://www.cliki.net/croatoan
17:51 phf i'm thinking of doing a plan9 style approach, where remote pest station just dumps raw messages, but one can connect to it over e.g. ssh using some simple gui, like ltk, and get a semblance of usable experience
17:52 phf that is remote station keeps track of state, and you can connect to it with a rich interface of some sort
17:53 signpost seems sensible to not couple tightly to a particular client.
17:53 phf alternatively emacs/swank :D
17:54 signpost huehue, should be good enough!
17:54 whaack awt: yup, connected with my irc, %at returns
17:54 whaack whaack 198.211.117.133:7780 no packets received from this address
17:55 awt whaack: in that case odd that you wouldn't be seeing rubbish messages going out in the log
17:55 whaack awt: i started seeing rubbish messages once i connected my ic client
17:56 whaack so looks like the rubbish msgs dont get sent until the client conects
17:56 awt ah hmm. must be some condition there based on the client connection existing that I forgot about
17:58 whaack awt: hmmm quite odd
17:58 whaack i got msgs from server
17:58 whaack <whaack> 002 Your host is whaack, running Blatta 9976 and Pest 0xFC
17:58 whaack on my bot's client
17:59 whaack which leads me to believe that they are indeed communicating even though %at says they haven't sent a packet
17:59 awt those are sent from the built in irc server on connect only to your irc client.
17:59 whaack ah okay
18:00 whaack awt: didn't you have some trick to test if udp was working?
18:00 awt whaack: at one point I resorted to using tcpdump
18:01 awt you could set it up at either end on the ports which should be receiving traffic
18:01 awt receiving or sending, that is
18:02 whaack hm i thought it was like "echo -n "hello" >/dev/udp/192.168.1.102/8000"
18:02 whaack i can do that on my irc box and i canot do it on my bot's box... may be telling
18:03 awt oh yeah there's that as well.
18:10 whaack completely confused
18:11 whaack i can send garbage udps between the two and they correctly detect the garbage
18:11 whaack but when they send legit msgs via blatta neither side sees anything from the other
18:22 signpost might be time to step the thing through a debugger.
18:22 signpost intellij's is pretty great for pycode.
18:23 whaack test
18:25 awt yeah you could put a breakpoint where data is read from the udp port for a sanity check
18:27 whaack i wonder if there is anyway there is some problem with the name of my computer on my bots end being 'whaack'
18:28 whaack might do debugger later, ready to throw in the towel soon

20:48 awt signpost: the order buffer on versions up to 9976 doesn't expect duplicate messages, so doesn't dedup handles properly when for example when for some reason ...
20:48 awt multiple GETDATA requests are triggered for the same message and multiple responses are received.
20:48 signpost ah ok
20:49 * signpost setting up over here with the intellij debugger so I can stop asking lazy questions
20:49 awt or something close to that. I have a version here that prevents that from happening but haven't yet published

20:54 phf still working?
20:54 signpost yup, can read ya.
20:56 phf doesn't seem to barf on newlines, but i actually sent foo~%bar. probably should handle it on my side, but perhaps needs to be a clarification in spec

21:44 asciilifeform ... weirdly enuff, the echo bombed asciilifeform's local blatta
21:45 asciilifeform but not the 1 on dulapnet
21:45 asciilifeform ( and phf's original bombed neither )
21:45 asciilifeform awt ^
21:45 phf could also be the newline that bombed it
21:46 asciilifeform possib
21:46 phf foo
21:46 asciilifeform not blew yet

22:19 awt weechat seems to break multiline messages into separate messages
22:20 awt I believe IRC protocol breaks messages using carriage return
22:30 phf lets see if this one works
22:31 phf so i'm going to repeat http://logs.bitdash.io/pest/2022-07-08#1008833, if one checks the log on asciilifeform's there's a dulapbot response, but not on bitdash
22:31 bitbot Logged on 2022-07-08 22:01:43 phf[billymg]: hmm, i've not gotten either messages from dulapbot, e.g. http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/pest/2022-07-08#1009020
22:33 phf awt: yeah, multiline is more of a frontend concern, but note that irc chats don't always break long lines correctly. e.g. utf-8 encoded strings might get broken in the middle of a multibyte character, or else using naive character count as opposed to byte count (which would be longer)
22:41 awt asciilifeform could possibly try initializing the string literal from whence formatted_message comes as a utf-8 string.
22:42 awt Not sure exactly what is in the body there.
