03:37 BingoBoingo !up MolokoDeck
03:37 RagnarDanneskjol oh yea
03:37 MolokoDeck hello, ragnar
03:37 RagnarDanneskjol ahoy
03:38 MolokoDeck so, I'm still reviewing the bitcoin-assets log related to a bot project involving posting and cryptosigning cryptodocuments.. or something to that effect.
03:40 MolokoDeck ok. so it handles both pre-encrypted and plaintext documents.
03:41 MolokoDeck authentication test from a single-point trusted registry.
03:42 MolokoDeck insertion of validation hash onto the bitcoin block chain with a transaction: requires use of the bitcoind API or connection to the bitcoin mining network.
03:43 BigBitz mircea_popescu I like LastPass, actually :)
03:43 MolokoDeck also requires the bot to have a wallet.
03:43 RagnarDanneskjol nothing to do with inserting hash to bitcoin
03:43 MolokoDeck am I reading the same thing you are?
03:43 RagnarDanneskjol and not necessarily running bitcoind / wallet. i will let mircea elaborate
03:44 RagnarDanneskjol yes
03:44 MolokoDeck "2. all the valid deeds received in a specified interval, say 512 seconds, are appended together, hashed, and the resulting hash is inserted into a bitcoin transaction, which becomes part of the bitcoin blocchain."
03:44 mircea_popescu RagnarDanneskjol more or less.
03:44 mircea_popescu MolokoDeck hey there.
03:44 MolokoDeck only the validating hash goes on the blockchain, not the entire block of documents, I take it?
03:44 MolokoDeck hello.
03:45 mircea_popescu yes, only the hash.
03:46 MolokoDeck the bot has to buffer state and monitor for validations, which could take tens of minutes, then inform the irc channel, and update the central web logs for public notice.
03:46 BigBitz mircea_popescu you're trying to create some new bot? what purpose?
03:46 mircea_popescu tis in teh logs.
03:46 MolokoDeck automated contract notarization I would think.
03:47 mircea_popescu MolokoDeck validations of what ?
03:47 MolokoDeck or something entirely general purpose.
03:47 BigBitz mircea_popescu you know I am lazy. :(
03:47 RagnarDanneskjol bigbitz http://log.bitcoin-assets.com/?date=11-08-2014#789365
03:47 assbot #bitcoin-assets log
03:47 BigBitz thanks RagnarDanneskjol.
03:48 MolokoDeck the block of documents gets cryptosigned with a hash of the documents inside. That hash gets sent to the blockchain. The other validation (initial validation) is of the cryptosignature on each document. The documents have to be legit before they go into the bundle that get's logged and recorded permenently as a hash on the blockchain.
03:48 MolokoDeck so I overloade the term "validate".
03:48 MolokoDeck overloaded.
03:49 MolokoDeck the blockchain is being used to make an immutable public record of the authenticating hash of the document bundle being published.
03:51 MolokoDeck since the hash is inserted as a comment in the blockchain, I think one might be able to create bogus blocks that have the same has by inserting a salt and mining a single hash here.
03:51 MolokoDeck lemme think about that.
03:51 MolokoDeck you can't change the hash, but you could make any block match the hash, possibly, if you had enough mining time.
03:52 BigBitz Negative.
03:52 MolokoDeck it wouldn't be on the central trusted registry though, but that may not be entirely secure. or someone would have to check an document the recieved by another channel against the central registry or website.
03:53 BigBitz the nonce, at best, you could influence.
03:53 MolokoDeck ok. am I clueless?
03:53 BigBitz the block hash you cannot influence (AFAIK)
03:53 MolokoDeck right, you'd dither the nonce until you got some other block to match the hash.
03:53 BigBitz heh, I may be clueless, but I don't think a miner can influence the hash value of the clock.
03:53 MolokoDeck oh nevermind. It would have to match the ENTIRE hash. megayears. ok. i get it.
03:53 BigBitz err block.
03:53 BigBitz Yup - correct.
03:53 BigBitz If they had some quantums, maybe :P
03:54 MolokoDeck I'm not sure there's a quantum algorith for SHA256 that's particularly leveraged, but there are supposedly turing-complete quantum gate computers that could accellerate that. Let's not go into that.
03:55 MolokoDeck those don't exist yet at any meaningful scale.
03:55 BingoBoingo lol, There was an optical computing conversation this week...
03:55 MolokoDeck whatever happened to that optical matrix multiplcation chip?
03:55 MolokoDeck ok. getting distracted.
03:55 BigBitz :)
03:55 MolokoDeck hi.
03:55 BigBitz hey.
03:56 BigBitz I just you.
03:56 BigBitz and this is crazy.
03:56 BigBitz but here's my number.
03:56 BigBitz so call me maybe?
03:57 mircea_popescu <MolokoDeck> right, you'd dither the nonce until you got some other block to match the hash. << the nonce isn't actually large enough
03:57 BingoBoingo I just met you, this is crazy. Here's my weiner. So blow me baby.
03:57 MolokoDeck doable in php or python. php has a fairly bad reputation in cryptocurrency lately. And in computer science for different reasons (you can't predict the outcome of certain operations).
03:57 mircea_popescu you'd need a nonce as large as the keyspace of the hash
03:57 MolokoDeck also in php one would either have to use a package or use system calls to do the encryption.
03:58 MolokoDeck I've done it that way.
03:58 MolokoDeck I was wondering about that. I'm not clear on how much influence a nonce has on hash outcomes. so that explains that question.
03:58 BigBitz none is only 32 bit field.
03:59 BigBitz nonce. man. my typing is getting bad in my older years.
03:59 MolokoDeck I was considering just adding an arbirary number of bits to the bogus message.
04:00 MolokoDeck anyway, I think you've settled my question about the feasibility/non-feasibility of spoofing a single hash.
04:01 MolokoDeck the security of the bot sending something via bitcoin api ... still thinking about that.
04:02 MolokoDeck is this for everyone in the world to use, or only for a select community of presumable trusted parties?
04:02 MolokoDeck obviously they'd have to be registered with wot.
04:02 RagnarDanneskjol or just each other
04:02 BingoBoingo MolokoDeck: If you have a good source of entropy for nonces, electrum has a nice CLI, this thing prolly ought to be connected to a private electrum server though if going for that over bitcoind
04:02 MolokoDeck looking at a case where anyone can put a hash on the blockchain and present a document block with that hash.
04:03 mircea_popescu MolokoDeck to validate a hash has to be signed by someone in assbot's l2
04:04 mircea_popescu meh,. a message not a hash
04:05 MolokoDeck sure, a non-mining/non-blockchain-manitaining client.

04:07 RagnarDanneskjol I got server space coming outta my ears

17:26 justusranvier The theory is it's a laundring operation of the exact form use by politial campain fundraising

17:26 justusranvier The Ether "investors" are the same vendors who are going be paid using the received Bitcoins.
17:26 mircea_popescu but just as long as there's a clear delineation of risk, and you undertake the risk of ethereum not going anywhere, we can prolly hammer something out
17:26 los_pantalones yeah, this is what i had in mind
17:27 los_pantalones i send, i risk today to aug, you deliver ether then
17:27 mircea_popescu justusranvier didja see you got baronized meanwhile btw ?
17:27 justusranvier I did. Thanks. Do I get a castle or something now? Vassals?
17:28 los_pantalones and it would be really small, ~30 something btc
17:28 mircea_popescu justusranvier well you get the ability to permavoice ppls.
17:28 los_pantalones i just signed your gpg too
17:28 mircea_popescu los_pantalones that 30 something btc would not only be the biggest anyone's entertained yet,
17:29 mircea_popescu but it would actually exceed the sum total of ~20 or so different parties.
17:29 justusranvier Useful.
17:29 mircea_popescu los_pantalones well no point in signing it, seeing how it doesn't have your name on it and its past its own expiration clause
17:30 los_pantalones no, i signed your gpg outside of this, got the company i'm working with to start to come around on the idea of everyone having one
17:30 los_pantalones so i thought you were the best place to start
17:30 mircea_popescu oh oh you mean you signed my gpg signature ?
17:30 los_pantalones yes
17:30 mircea_popescu yeah makes sense. and yeah, get the bums in the wot.
17:30 los_pantalones agreed, have to start somewhere
17:30 mircea_popescu who knows, maybe next time they open the books, a baron is you :D

17:30 los_pantalones ha
17:31 los_pantalones well, not if i'm the biggest fool of the bunch!
17:31 mircea_popescu you know this multisig thing is tempting conceptually, much like multi addresses seem the only way to go.
17:32 mircea_popescu however, in practice, one quickly discovers that value accumulates, and a signature or a btc address is more like a domain name than even a domain name.
17:32 BigBitz mutlisig is nice.
17:32 BigBitz multisig as well.
17:32 mircea_popescu BigBitz i didn't mean the power ranger derpage. i just meant, one having multiple gpg signatures.
17:32 BigBitz subkeys you mean?
17:33 los_pantalones nah, new pubkey
17:33 los_pantalones i have a personal one, attached to my activities outside of work
17:33 los_pantalones and one for work porpoises
17:34 mircea_popescu maybe that's the right way to go and i'm just seeing the particular effects of my very peculiar personality, where i have no problem receiving slut selfies on office@
17:34 los_pantalones i don't technically own the trust i earn working for this company
17:34 los_pantalones i think would be the argument they would make

20:48 justusranvier Sounds like an ideal place for Bitcoin adoption
20:49 godovo or a window into how west will look like (financially) in a few years?
20:49 justusranvier mircea_popescu: The Warlord is a rather obscure movie. I'm surprised to see that reference.
20:49 mircea_popescu good movie.
20:50 mircea_popescu godovo seems like a good place.
20:51 asciilifeform if the cognac is ~10 usd (0.12 usd / peso at today's official rate), the 700 mL is ~14 usd / liter. --> about what rotgut costs in wash. dc.
20:51 godovo Timisoara is a good place, too
20:52 godovo is it for the long-term, the move? I thought you were just traveling
20:52 justusranvier Funny thing about The Warlord is the younger brother is made out to be a villian and Charleton Heston made out to be heroic, however the younger brother is right every step of the way.
20:53 justusranvier Had he just listened, the entire movie would have been moot
20:53 mircea_popescu asciilifeform this is really good stuff tho.

20:54 mircea_popescu he's not a knight, he's a rogue.
20:55 justusranvier Regardless.
20:55 mircea_popescu myeah.
20:56 mircea_popescu the same thing happens in science all the time
20:56 justusranvier The love interest gets married to a guy who she grew up with in the same house. Warlord refuses to allow the marriage on the grounds of incest. Problem averted.
20:56 mircea_popescu people who are fundamentally right get misrepresented as being utterly wrong because science progresses generally within a paradigm
20:56 mircea_popescu shifts are rare.
20:57 mircea_popescu justusranvier nah. 1) it wasn't incest by the legal definition they were using ; 2) warlord is no cleric.
20:57 asciilifeform do people not read tom kuhn any more ?
20:57 justusranvier Still, they needed his permission to get married. Means he could have denied it and saved a lot of death and property destruction.
20:58 * asciilifeform tried to find this film, or some discussion thereof - where is it ?
20:59 mircea_popescu justusranvier well the problem is... he couldn't have. this is like saying "usg could have fixed btc in 2010, saved a lot of 2014-16 headaches"

20:59 mircea_popescu that thing
20:59 asciilifeform aha
21:02 justusranvier It's a story about how sitting on the fence is the worst possible outcome.
21:03 justusranvier Had the protagonist had simply been ruthless and calculating about getting what he wanted, he could have done so without provoking a revolt. If he had decided to do the right thing, he'd have kept it in his pants and avoided the entire crisis.
21:03 justusranvier By trying to do both, he lost everything.
21:04 justusranvier Moral of the story: If you're going to be a good person or an evil person, at least put in some reasonable effortwhichever option you choose.
21:07 mircea_popescu human condition yo.
21:08 mircea_popescu had you known which is evil and which is good, you could have saved a lot of headache.
21:10 decimation like the non-criminals who failed to murder hitler before he became Hitler
21:10 justusranvier Well "good" would be, "don't be a warlord". Since he'd already decided to adopt the "might makes right" standard of ethics by being in that profession, he would have been better off staying consistent.
21:15 Mexual hola
21:16 BingoBoingo Hello Mexual?
21:16 mircea_popescu the norman period warlord is not exactly a might makes right stand.
21:17 mircea_popescu it's more like a reverberation of the constantine emperors "holy host" approach to battle.
21:17 mircea_popescu ie, in being blessed by christ he will always be mighty enough.
