13:38 whaack re pest/blatta marketing, i'm going to put it out there that i'm not the biggest fan of the name, most likely because i interned at a company called cockroachdb
13:39 whaack so it's the 2nd time i'm hearing the 'let's name our product ~cockroach cuz theyre hard to get rid of'
13:40 whaack why not dragonfly? they are also hard to get rid of, and they are beautiful critters
13:53 cgra http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2022-01-11#1072528 << you're right, i forgot the collection had a handful of these as well. the only, strictly permanent leaking item is "mapAlreadyAskedFor", while "setInventoryKnown" leaks until peer disconnects, "mapAddresses" accumulates for ~two weeks until gc starts to follow, and some others have 2min-24h accumulation times.

13:53 cgra for interested readers: the above defects require the attacker himself to upload ~1:1 of the garbage being parked into victim's memory, while, for example, a carefully arranged 10e6 byte-burst of "getheaders" messages blows up into ~530GB (10e6 / 1021 * 718305 * 81) of peak memory load (also node locks up until done with the burst, and the processing slows down every 4GB). other "burst defects" are less severe, but similar.
13:54 cgra http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2022-01-11#1072541 << the hole obey_sendbuffersize plugs, still remains a mystery to me why causes slow death. at one point i thought the above "getheaders" processing slowing down every 4GB was it, but i didn't know about the 4GB-ism of it then. obv not the key point, cuz apu1 would be oom way before accumulating 4GB of extra garbage.
13:54 dulapbot Logged on 2022-01-11 18:29:12 asciilifeform: (iirc at least 1 of cgra's findings was a wedge w/out necessarily oom death)
14:01 cgra http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2022-01-11#1072474 << whaack, my "100GB or so" was way off, though might match better some of the other burst defect variants

14:19 billymg i think "pest" has potential. i never really thought of "blatta" as anymore than a codename for one implementation, definitely not something that would be pushed in marketing materials, mainly because it sounds like "blah"
14:19 billymg cockroachdb was a horrible name, i think cockroach is too specific
14:22 billymg "pest" is just an annoyance, a nuisance. and it's the kind of word you'd imagine a darth vader type of the evil empire would utter in frustration when his men fail to kill the enemy for the Nth time
14:24 whaack yes i'm okay with pest lol
~ 25 minutes ~
14:50 asciilifeform whaack, billymg : orig. asciilifeform was thinking of 'pest' in the plague, rather than cockroach sense.
14:50 asciilifeform fwiw.
14:53 asciilifeform http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2022-01-12#1072559 << is wai asciilifeform still thinks per conn. 'odometer' may be the simplest effective pill against these

15:27 billymg re: marketing, i simply enjoy imagining the cognitive dissonance that would arise in normies' heads when they see a website that looks like it could've been put out by $SV_Corp but that contains content trips all of their "terrorist!" alarm bells
15:28 billymg a slick package that says "safe space" free of "hate speech" but is actually not
15:28 billymg so in that sense to me it's less about marketing and more about trolling
15:28 asciilifeform billymg: asciilifeform's www from this pov currently 'weak sauce', for these folx prolly only trips 'ugh, maffs soup, tldr' alarm

15:48 whaack awt: i have a hunch you added my key, and for some reason that crashed my blatta process
15:59 thimbronion ok could rename blatta to nosos.

16:00 thimbronion plague
16:00 whaack i like it haha

16:39 gregory5 asciilifeform: on my system, nc(1) is able to detect when a server has stopped listening on a particular UDP port.
16:39 gregory5 how is that possible? doesn't that violate the premise of UDP being stateless?

~ 1 hours 14 minutes ~
18:00 asciilifeform gregory5: under unixlikes you gotta bind the socket to listen (i.e. tell os which process the incoming packets oughta hand off to, and reserve a port)
18:00 asciilifeform gregory5: errything to do with what happens b/w that and closing it is stateless.
18:01 asciilifeform (in practice -- reality's moar complicated, if yer behind a nat, there's the quite stateful 'ephemeral port' thing. but this is orthogonal.)
18:01 asciilifeform http://logs.nosuchlabs.com/log/asciilifeform/2022-01-12#1072595 << fwiw asciilifeform has never before heard of a 'cockroachdb' so perhaps the title was overambitious..

18:24 PeterL actually, "safespace" not too bad of a name - it's the space you can talk that is free from snoops watching you (or something like that)
18:25 cgra and nicely collides with the opposite meaning
18:25 * shinohai ponders an implementation called the "Hate Disseminator 9000" .....
18:27 PeterL 900 implementations, all identical but with differrent names just to confuse people
18:36 * asciilifeform associates *safe names w/ various spamologies, and worse yet, mswin 'safe mode' lol
